Property market slump drags on Helia
Lenders’ mortgage insurer Helia Group says the weak housing market affected its third-quarter result, but its annual earnings outlook is unchanged.
“The September 2026 quarter saw further slowing in the Australian housing market, including lower property transaction volumes and lower house prices,” Helia said in a trading update.
“These conditions have had some impact on our results over the quarter.”
Helia recorded $20.9 million gross written premium in the quarter, $82.8 million insurance revenue, underwriting profit of $52.7 million and statutory net profit of $36.5 million.
Incurred claims totalled $5.1 million, according to the update, which does not provide results from the corresponding period last year.
The group says the figures are extracted from its quarterly lodgement to the Australian Prudential Regulation Authority.
GWP in the nine months to September fell to $82.5 million from $176 million a year earlier, and insurance revenue slipped 8% to $253.4 million.
Helia attributes the GWP drop to “the loss of the CBA contract, along with the expansion of the Australian government’s 5% deposit scheme and a slowing in home lending”.
The group’s guidance for annual insurance revenue remains at $330-$360 million and the total incurred claims ratio is still expected to be “well below” through-the-cycle average levels.
