Tim Wills has been appointed head of marine for Australia at Markel Insurance.

He will launch Markel’s marine products, starting with cargo, as the specialty insurer expands its offering in Australia for the first time since launching here with long-tail lines two years ago.

“This diversification into marine is a continuation of our plan to put local, empowered specialty underwriters on the ground in Australia, serving the unique needs of our customers in each jurisdiction,” local MD Rory Morison said.

“Tim’s expertise makes him a valuable addition to our team and we’re very excited to welcome him.”

Markel, which also offers casualty and professional and financial risks cover in Australia, says global sea trade volumes and vessel values continue to rise.

Sydney-based Mr Wills was most recently Tokio Marine Kiln head of marine in Asia-Pacific, and has held marine insurance roles at Chubb and QBE.
