Law firm’s insurance chief to step back after four decades
Barry Nilsson’s insurance and health lead Rhett Kennedy will retire as principal at the end of December after 40 years at the law firm.
He will continue in a consulting capacity from next year as principal Jordan Farr and special counsel Gillian Sheppard lead the Queensland financial lines team.
“I retire knowing the firm is in the best shape it has ever been and I have the utmost confidence in the team who will step forward in my place,” Brisbane-based Mr Kennedy said.
Mr Kennedy established Barry Nilsson’s insurance practice, the largest in its portfolio, and developed long-standing partnerships with top insurance clients, the firm says.
As chair until last year, he championed responsible business practices, leading Barry Nilsson to develop its 2026 diversity and inclusion strategy and exceed pro-bono targets.
Current chair Peter Murdoch says he has “been an outstanding leader” and “we thank Rhett for his deep commitment to set the firm up for ongoing success”.
