Victoria’s new firefighting fleet ready for take-off

The Victorian government has unveiled its new firefighting air fleet as the state prepares for this year’s elevated-risk season.

There are 54 aircraft, including two new fixed-wing planes capable of capturing high-quality infrared images and more accurate map readings.

The fleet also features a recommissioned Super Puma helicopter for night firefighting, two large air tankers and two high-volume air cranes.

The unveiling at Avalon Airport follows last month’s launch of 15 regional aircraft, which have already responded to several threats.

“We’ve already seen how important aircraft are in supporting emergency services to fight fires, and the remainder of the fleet will play an important role in supporting communities across the state over the coming months,” Victorian emergency management commissioner Tim Wiebusch said.

This year’s bushfire outlook warns of a warm, dry summer for Victoria, with elevated risk in the state’s west and southwest.

State Emergency Services Minister Vicki Ward has urged people to create home fire plans and travel fire plans for any journeys this summer.

“Fire preparedness is a shared responsibility – we need all Victorians to get ready and stay informed so everyone can enjoy summer safely,” she said.
