State boosts bushfire mitigation scheme budget

NSW says investment in a bushfire hazard reduction program has increased by $1 million, taking the total to $6.8 million.

The Rural Fire Service has provided the extra Crown Lands funding through the bushfire risk mitigation and resilience support program, adding to $5.8 million in government spending this fiscal year.

The investment will support work on 300 sites, including upgrades and maintenance of strategic asset protection zones on Crown land.

“Every bit of preparation we do now makes a real difference when the fire danger peaks,” state Emergency Services Minister Jihad Dib said.

“These works are about protecting people, homes and communities, giving our firefighters the best possible chance when conditions turn.”

Crown Lands is responsible for maintaining about 2120km of fire trails and 670 hectares of asset protection zones in the state, providing access for firefighting crews and equipment.

The funding is part of a $13 million mitigation program for Crown land, which also includes $6.2 million for upgrading and maintaining fire trails.
