Farms can reduce risk to greenhouses through air vent positioning during storms, hail-resistant tempered glass and fire-retardant screens, according to specialist insurer Hagelunie.

Other tips include use of quality guidelines for lighting, water silo maintenance and electrical inspections, director of greenhouse horticulture Marie Groenhof says.

She adds plant health is core to the sector’s sustainability.

And in Europe, biodiversity strategies, including predatory insects and microbial solutions, are helping growers strengthen crops naturally, Ms Groenhof says.
