RAA says claims data makes case for accident cover

Accidental damage has accounted for 35% of the 14,000 home insurance claims made with SA insurer RAA this financial year, new data reveals.

The insurer says water/liquid damage has driven another 17% of claims, followed by storm damage at 14% and food spoilage at 10%.

RAA claims head Jess Lyons says accidental damage cover is optional under the group’s home and contents policies, and it has proven valuable for many customers.

“Families invest significantly in items like TVs and laptops, and we all know how easily accidents can happen, leading to them needing to be fixed or replaced,” she said.

“About 37% of policyholders don’t have accidental damage as an optional extra, so it’s worth checking with your insurer if you’re not sure what you’re covered for under your policy.”

Ms Lyons also recommends homeowners maintain their properties, including keeping gutters clean before wet weather seasons.
