Life specialist cops ban over ‘deceptive conduct’

An adviser has been hit with an eight-year ban from the financial services industry after regulators found he engaged in deceptive behaviour when submitting life insurance applications for clients.

Munther El-Alami’s misconduct occurred when he worked as a life specialist with Advizer, the Australian Securities and Investments Commission says.

“ASIC found that Mr El-Alami did not comply with a financial services law by engaging in misleading or deceptive conduct … ASIC also found it had reason to believe that Mr El-Alami is not a fit and proper person, is not competent to participate in the Australian financial services industry and is likely to contravene a financial services law.”

Mr El-Alami can appeal to the Administrative Review Tribunal for a review of ASIC’s decision. The ban took effect on September 17.
