Canstar salutes Allianz’s ‘smart tech’ for food spoilage claims

Allianz Australia has won a Canstar Innovation Excellence Award for its agentic AI initiative to automate food spoilage claims.

The tool, launched last year and piloted in Australia, can reduce average claim processing and settlement times by about 80%, according to the insurer.

This means food spoilage matters can be settled within hours, not days.

“By leveraging smart technology, Allianz is transforming the way high-volume, low-complexity claims are handled,” Canstar’s Josh Sale said.

“This innovation highlights how technology and human expertise can work together to deliver faster, more accessible support.”

Allianz chief claims officer Luke Whenman says claim volume spikes can cause delays for customers, and the food spoilage tool streamlines the process after extreme weather events.

“Our AI-driven automation of food spoilage claims can rapidly speed up routine processing, allowing payouts to reach customers in a matter of hours so they can secure essential supplies and support their families,” he said.

Allianz previously won Canstar awards in 2024 for its home insurance indicative quotes, and in 2020 for its travel insurance claims automation.
