WA committee reviews e-bike, scooter regulations
A state parliamentary committee will examine safety management in WA’s e-rideable program and consider new regulations.
Road Safety Minister Reece Whitby says the Community Development and Justice Standing Committee will look at further restrictions on the devices, including penalties for illegal behaviour and night-time curfews.
It will also look at data on injuries caused by e-rideables and advise the federal government on limiting the import of non-compliant devices.
Mr Whitby says the review will weigh restrictions around Perth’s highly populated areas and entertainment precincts.
“I am very concerned about the safety of e-riders and pedestrians on Perth’s paths and roads, and that is why we’ve chosen to take a bipartisan approach on this important matter,” he said.
“This latest commitment follows my work with WA Police, which carried out an enforcement blitz in entertainment precincts this past weekend.
“I have also asked the Road Safety Commission to educate and promote awareness of the correct and legal use of e-rideables within the community.”
The inquiry is due to issue a report by the end of September.
