Strata taskforce releases crackdown stats
The NSW Strata and Property Taskforce has taken disciplinary action against more than 70 licensees across real estate, strata management and conveyancing in just over a year since it was formed, the state government says.
The taskforce has removed more than 10 operators from the industry, and has completed more than 175 “anywhere, any time” investigations in unit blocks, issuing almost 80 fines totalling more than $125,000.
NSW established the taskforce while introducing legislative reforms to strengthen protections for people living in strata developments, including around managing agent conflicts of interest and insurance transparency.
Fair Trading commissioner Natasha Mann says the taskforce has provided the tools needed to step in earlier and act where required.
“We’re delivering practical benefits for homeowners by giving them greater confidence in how their buildings are managed and how property transactions are undertaken,” she said. “These actions are about protecting consumers and maintaining the integrity of the property and strata sectors.”
The government says a fourth and final tranche of legislation relating to announced reforms is before parliament.
It has also been considering a Productivity and Equality Commission report released in March that recommended banning strata managers from accepting commissions and restricting supplier intermediaries including insurance brokers from receiving commissions for related work.
