State targets tobacco trade landlords
NSW has introduced new penalties for commercial landlords who let their properties be used for the illegal sale of tobacco.
The laws will apply to property owners shown to have been aware of the trade and failing to act. Offenders could face up to one year in prison, a maximum fine of $165,000 or both.
State Health Minister Ryan Park says the crackdown will “further minimise the opportunities for illegal tobacco and vape sales to flourish. We know the vast majority of landlords do the right thing – but those bad actors out there not only undermine legitimate business, they also expose communities to criminal activity.
“These penalties are the result of extensive consultation and will strike a fair and reasonable balance that ensures we target landlords who are knowingly permitting illegal activity.”
The change follows a raft of penalties and additional authority powers introduced in September to tackle the underworld tobacco trade.
The NSW government says it imposed $597,200 of fines for e-cigarette and tobacco offences in the year to October 27.
