State sells Lismore houses under flood buyback scheme
The NSW government has sold 10 repurchased Lismore homes, in a round of auctions that attracted more than 20 bidders.
The flood-affected properties were sold last Wednesday for prices between $6000 and $60,000.
The sales followed buybacks under the $880 million Resilient Homes Program, jointly funded by the state and federal government.
Buyers – who have acquired the homes only – are required to relocate buildings within 12 months.
The properties across Lismore and Girards Hill were earmarked for relocation from extreme flood risk zones by the NSW Reconstruction Authority.
They are among 83 Northern Rivers properties offered for sale.
The state government says it has engaged with more than 1300 homeowners under its buyback program and made 926 purchase offers.
Further auctions for repurchased Northern Rivers homes will be held on October 7, with all money raised reinvested in the Resilient Homes Program.
NSW Recovery Minister Janelle Saffin says the auctions give buyers access to housing and mean flood-impacted homes have “a new lease of life”.
“There is no other place in Australia where you can get this kind of housing opportunity,” she said. “It is a chance to be a part of preserving the unique character of this great region and helping to create a safer and more resilient community.
“There are more opportunities to come, as soon as next month, as we want to see as many of these houses as possible become new homes for our community.”
