Queensland expands flood mitigation grants
More Queensland homeowners will have access to funds to protect their properties against flooding under a new arrangement between the state and federal governments.
The Stronger Homes Grant – which offers up to $10,000 – will be expanded to include people affected by rain and flood events in western Queensland between March and May last year, plus those hit by the Queensland monsoon trough, Cyclone Koji and Cyclone Narelle.
Homeowners in Barcoo, Bulloo, Bundaberg, Isaac, Rockhampton, Quilpie and Western Downs can undertake upgrades such as raising electrical and hot water systems or installing flood-resilient structures in their houses.
Applicants must provide photos of flood-damaged areas requiring resilience work, and a quote from a licensed contractor, industry professional or insurer that itemises necessary repairs.
The scheme was launched in response to flooding in north and Far North Queensland earlier last year. Local contractors completed more than 82% of the work.
“By building more flood-resilient homes, regional communities can have more confidence they will be able to better withstand future disasters,” federal Emergency Management Minister Kristy McBain said.
Queensland Housing Minister Sam O’Connor says the expanded program “means more communities can reduce future damage, avoid repeated recovery costs and stay in their homes.
“It’s about securing our housing foundations with simple upgrades that make a real difference.”
Applications are open until November 30, with all work to be completed by June 30 next year.
