NT pumps $100 million into flood fixes
The NT government has committed $100 million to a flood recovery fund to help communities in Katherine and surrounding areas.
Chief Minister Lia Finocchiaro says investments will prioritise restoring key infrastructure, including roads, bridges and flood mitigation systems.
NT Public Service Minister Jo Hersey, who represents Katherine, will oversee the fund. Department of Territory Families, Housing and Communities CEO Ken Davies has been made director-general to administer the initiative.
“This $100 million commitment provides certainty for communities at a time when they need it most,” Ms Finocchiaro said.
“This is not just about immediate recovery; this is about the future and flood mitigation.”
Earlier this month, the Insurance Council of Australia classified floods in the Katherine area a significant event.
Katherine endured its highest floods in 28 years, forcing more than 10% of residents to evacuate.
Additional flood warnings have been issued in Katherine due to Cyclone Narelle, which swept through NT at the weekend.
