Northern Rivers buyback program tops 900 home offers

The NSW Reconstruction Authority has settled on 699 flood buyback properties in the Northern Rivers region under the Resilient Homes Program.

When the $880 million program was launched after the record-breaking floods of 2022, it was estimated buybacks would be offered on 1100 flood-affected properties.

So far, 926 offers have been made, NSW Recovery Minister Janelle Saffin announced last week.

The Reconstruction Authority is demolishing the acquired houses, or gifting or auctioning them for relocation.

More than 54 homes have been sold, with nine auctioned this week for a total of $712,000. No reserve price is set on the houses.

Ms Saffin says the Resilient Homes Program is the largest adaptation program of its kind in the country. More than 1300 property owners have engaged with it.

The insurance industry has welcomed the program as a way to remove risk.
