Victoria’s Building and Plumbing Commission has discovered 24 unregistered builders and unlicensed people doing plumbing work in a blitz on residential and commercial building sites. 

Inspections of almost 350 sites around the state included compliance checks on building work under construction, including drainage work. 

Infringement notices were given for drainage work that failed to meet minimum standards or that was not ready for inspection. 

Fair Work Ombudsman inspectors attended some of the visits to check minimum wages, record-keeping and payslip compliance. 

The BPC began operations in July 2025, replacing the Victorian Building Authority, and in its first year more than tripled the number of prosecutions by the Authority the previous year. 

The BPC says it "regularly prosecutes those who put consumers at risk by undertaking building or plumbing work without the required accreditation or insurance".
