ASIC extends distribution rule relief

General insurance providers have been granted an extended exemption from appointing product distributors as authorised representatives.

After consultation, the Australian Securities and Investments Commission has remade legislative instrument 2015/682 as 2025/520 to extend the relief for another five years to August 27 2030.

Instrument 2015/682 is scheduled to expire next month.

“ASIC granted the relief to reduce the regulatory burden on … general insurance providers by removing technical requirements associated with the appointment of representatives,” ASIC said.

“This promotes the wide availability of … general insurance products to consumers by reducing the compliance costs to providers.”
