Alfred damage paves way for upgrade on problem causeway

A Gold Coast causeway damaged by Ex-Tropical Cyclone Alfred will be replaced with an elevated structure that improves flood protection.

Construction of the causeway over Mudgeeraba Creek is scheduled for next year, and the structure is expected to be 2.5m higher than the current one. The causeway will be built upstream from the previous structure.

Telecommunications relocation work for the creek area is also scheduled to start next year.

The federal government says the improvements will reduce the risk of road closures during heavy rain and maintain access to communities such as Austinville, Neranwood and Springbrook.

The project is funded by the federal and Queensland governments through the Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements, with the state providing additional investment to elevate the causeway.

“This work will limit the impact of floods and make a real difference to the people who live in and visit this beautiful part of the world,” federal Emergency Management Minister Kristy McBain said.

Queensland Main Roads Minister Brent Mickelberg says the upgrade “is about more than just infrastructure – it’s about protecting connectivity for the communities of Austinville, Neranwood and Springbrook during severe weather”.

State MP Ros Bates, who represents Mudgeeraba, says the current causeway “has been a constant frustration for families, especially when heavy rain cuts off access and isolates parts of our community. This is about keeping our community connected – rain, hail or shine.

“Locals deserve peace of mind knowing they can get to work, school or the shops safely, no matter the weather.”
