NT, Queensland under threat as major flood hits Katherine
Emergency warnings remain in place for flood-hit NT town Katherine’s 10,000-plus residents, while parts of Queensland are also bracing for severe inundation.
The monsoon season brought heavy rain and flooding to Katherine, 320km southeast of Darwin, the Bureau of Meteorology says.
The NT government said this morning heavy rainfall caused the Katherine River to top the 2006 flood level, inundating parts of the town, disrupting essential services and forcing people from their homes.
“Disaster assistance has been activated for residents within the Katherine Town Council area following an emergency situation declaration and major flooding that has impacted the town,” the government said.
“The Australian and NT governments are jointly providing support under the Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements to assist residents affected by flooding in Katherine.”
Allianz-owned TIO told insuranceNEWS.com.au it is closely monitoring the situation.
"At this point in time, we have only had a small number of claims, however with power outages in some affected areas we do expect this to increase."
In Queensland, heavy rain continued in the central region and Wide Bay and Burnett today, with locally intense falls possible, the Bureau of Meteorology said in an update this afternoon.
Catchments across the state are wet to saturated and will respond quickly to further heavy rain.
“Heavy rainfall continues across southeast Queensland today, but it’s likely to ease overnight tonight into early Tuesday morning,” senior meteorologist Miriam Bradbury said in a midday update.
“Flash flooding will remain a risk on Monday, but we’re likely to see the impacts of riverine flooding continuing for some days.”
