A Tasmanian safe driving program has scored a funding boost from the global governing body for motorsports.

The joint initiative between motoring club and insurer RACT and the Tasmanian government has received $230,000 from the Federation Internationale de l’Automobile, under its Safe Mobility for All and for Life program.

The Tasmanian scheme’s work targeting young drivers was showcased in Geneva last week.

The funding will allow the program to expand technology and community trials, with a focus on regional communities.

A pilot project will run from August to July next year.

It includes an expanded trial of a learner driver and supervisor smartphone app, community education sessions through schools, sporting clubs and neighbourhood houses, and subsidised driving lessons with accredited instructors.

RACT group CEO Mark Mugnaioni says the FIA recognition shows the strength of Tasmania’s collaborative approach.

“Keeping young Tasmanians safe on our roads requires more than one solution,” he said. “It takes research, listening to communities and bringing together the right partners to create practical programs that make a real difference.

“This program was shaped by evidence and co-designed with Tasmanians to understand the challenges learner drivers and their supervisors face.

“It brings together technology, peer support and practical driving experiences to better prepare young people for the road.”
