Homeowners warned over winter fire risk

Suncorp has urged homeowners to be vigilant when using heating products, issuing a warning over the “hidden danger” of winter house fires.

“We usually see a concerning rise in house fires caused by electrical appliances being placed in dangerous locations ... a heater too close to curtains or worn-out electric blankets being used,” AAMI assessing and supply chain head Steven Hussey said. “Even something as simple as leaving your heater on when you’ve just ducked out to the shops can cause a spark.”

He says the insurer has already received 750 fire-related claims this year, with school holidays a time of elevated risk.

Mr Hussey recommends homeowners inspect heating appliances for damaged plugs, cords or signs of overheating, and avoid overloading power outlets.

He also highlights the importance of keeping appliances at least a metre away from anything flammable, and regularly testing smoke alarms.

People with lithium-ion battery products should be extra mindful of potential dangers.

“These simple precautions can help protect your home, your belongings and, most importantly, your family.”

Queensland Fire Department fire safety EM Mark Halverson encourages people to use the school holidays to set up and practise fire escape plans.

“It is vital to have a rehearsed fire escape plan, so everyone in the household is aware of what they should do if a fire starts,” he said.
