Hazards body in ‘landmark partnership’ with Canadian counterpart

Natural Hazards Research Australia has formed a knowledge-sharing alliance with the Wildfire Resilience Consortium of Canada.

A memorandum of understanding signed by NHRA CEO Andrew Gissing and consortium executive director Garnet Mierau in Canada establishes a “formal pathway” for exchanging information on bushfire management.

“Advancing our knowledge around ... [bushfires] relies on local and global partnerships,” Mr Gissing said.

“Combined partnership efforts ensure we are doing the utmost to enhance public safety, resilience and sustainability locally and globally.”

NHRA says the collaboration will focus on community resilience, the rising frequency and severity of climate hazards, and further collaboration among governments and other stakeholders.

The agreement also flags future projects, including research into transnational wildfire resilience frameworks and Indigenous fire management, climate adaptation studies and disaster simulation.

“The agreement aims to generate mutual benefits for the national emergency management sectors in both countries, providing evidence-based tools and strategies that enhance all-hazards preparedness, response and recovery capability,” Natural Hazards Research Australia said.
