Google search trends show nation ‘bracing for disaster’
Cyclone Alfred was this year’s leading search term among Google users in Australia.
The storm also prompted the second-highest number of “how to” questions as Australians sought tips on preparing for cyclones, according to the search engine giant.
“Australia’s year in search offers a fascinating snapshot of our nation’s interests,” Google Australia search trends communications manager Camilla Ibrahim said.
“This year, our searches showed we were tuned in to the events shaping our world, both at home and abroad.
“We braced for natural disasters, turning to search not just for the latest updates on Cyclone Alfred – the top trending query of the year – but for crucial advice, asking, ‘How to prepare for a cyclone.’ ”
Commercial property insurer FM’s operations chief engineer Michael Hunneyball said of the results: “In a year defined by climate extremes, global instability and rapid technological change, Australians’ search habits show that resilience thinking is moving into the mainstream, and that’s something every industry can build on.
“Public awareness is pivotal for protecting homes, businesses and critical infrastructure during natural disasters.
“Preparedness searches often spike after major events, but the challenge is building that knowledge before the hazards strike, so you’re able to respond quickly and with certainty.”
