Allianz summer risk report warns on vulnerable homes

Allianz has launched a free online report to encourage Australians to prepare for the increased risks summer can bring.

The insurer says its claims data shows weather incidents alone cost $84 million last summer, with hailstorms accounting for $20.41 million and lightning strikes more than $7 million.

But it is not just weather risks that require attention – Allianz paid out $2.6 million last summer for lithium battery-related issues, and theft claims soared, costing $1.62 million in the two-week festive period alone.

An Allianz survey shows almost one in five people are not investing in summer home maintenance, with many citing cost-of-living pressures.

“Our claims data clearly shows us that Australians experience a variety of risks across the summer season – from unexpected poor weather to theft and breakage,” chief claims officer Luke Whenman said.

“Our homes are a hub of celebration and relaxation during summer, but they’re also vulnerable when left unprotected.

“With claims often increasing over the summer period, it’s vital to put simple precautions in place such as inspecting your barbecue for leaks and faults, securing loose outdoor items to minimise storm hazards, and ensuring all doors, windows and locks are properly secured before heading away.”
