Allianz aims to educate EV drivers as cover quotes surge
Allianz says the number of electric vehicle policy quotes it issues has jumped by two-thirds compared with a year ago.
Now, the insurer has shared EV safety tips as demand picks up.
A survey last month of 178 electric vehicle drivers found a need for education on the technology, Allianz says.
Half of respondents reported touch-screen controls initially affected their driving ability.
More than one-fifth said the controls were more distracting than a mobile phone, and 42% felt nervous driving near pedestrians and cyclists due to EVs’ quieter operation.
More than one-third were concerned about adjusting to instant acceleration. Drivers also reported running out of battery power earlier than expected.
“We’re hoping these findings help encourage drivers to take the time to familiarise themselves with how their vehicle operates, from charging and battery management to features like regenerative braking and instant acceleration,” Allianz emerging risks manager Chris Wood said.
Allianz suggests new EV drivers use familiar roads in off-peak times before attempting more high-stress environments.
Other tips include becoming familiar with regenerative braking, learning about handling and driving responses, and establishing a charging routine.
Allianz also says insurance should be reviewed. For example, its comprehensive cover includes charging equipment, accessories and more.
