Floods storm in as Dennis menaces UK

Parts of the UK were inundated with severe rain and flooding as Storm Dennis triggered a highest red warning alert for south Wales from the Met Office yesterday.

Dennis is the latest storm to hit the UK, following Storm Ciara-Sabine earlier this month that also affected other European countries.

The red warning alert for rain is the first to be issued since December 2015.

“The forecast is for very significant levels of rain, especially in the eastern valleys of South Wales,” Natural Resources Wales Head of Flood and Incident Risk Management Jeremy Parr said. “Impacts could be severe overnight, and everyone should take the warnings extremely seriously.”

According to catastrophe modeller AIR Worldwide, insured losses from Ciara-Sabine are about €1.1-1.9 billion ($1.7-$3.1 billion), with the majority of claims to come from the UK, France and Germany.
