Calgary hail bill climbs as claims near end

The Calgary hailstorm of August last year caused insured losses of $C3.29 billion ($3.68 billion), according to the latest estimate from Canadian data provider Catastrophe Indices and Quantification.

A series of thunderstorms developed in Southern Alberta, and some produced hailstones the size of baseballs, CaTIQ says.

The storm that hit northern Calgary damaged homes and businesses, with hail punching holes in vinyl siding on properties, smashing windows and breaking roofs.

It was the second-costliest disaster in Canadian history, by insured losses.

The latest estimate is a slight increase on CaTIQ’s February update and reflects that 85% of personal and 90% of motor claims have been closed.

Calgary has endured several storms producing hail damage in recent years. So far this year, it has had only one, and the loss is not expected to be near last year’s.
