Munich Re adds satellite flood images to client platform

Satellite group ICEYE’s flood imaging will be available on Munich Re’s Location Risk Intelligence Platform from next month.

The platform helps users assess risks associated with natural hazards and climate change.

Munich Re head of risk management partners Christof Reinert says the images give a “decisive advantage” to customers.

“By integrating ICEYE into the platform, we provide even more comprehensive insights into natural risk disaster exposure. The flood event data is a substantial feature that can improve our offering,” he said.

ICEYE has launched 62 synthetic aperture radar satellites into orbit since 2018, and its images help insurers manage natural catastrophe responses.

Additional ICEYE products – including for hurricanes and wildfires – will be made available for resale by Munich Re to its customers worldwide.

ICEYE recently launched five satellites from California via mission manager Exolaunch aboard the Transporter-15 “ride-share” with rocket company SpaceX.

“This launch marks another important step both in supporting our customers in deploying their own constellations and scaling the world’s most advanced commercial SAR constellation,” CEO Rafal Modrzewski said.

Finland-based ICEYE has offices in Australia, Poland, Spain, the UK, Japan, UAE, Greece and the US, and more than 900 employees.
