Intel experts team up on wildfire tracking
Finnish microsatellite manufacturer ICEYE has partnered with German aerospace company OroraTech to expands its wildfire intelligence capabilities.
ICEYE’s synthetic aperture radar (SAR) capabilities help insurers assess building-level damage during wildfires, even through smoke, cloud cover or darkness.
It says integrating OroraTech’s thermal satellite intelligence tools will allow visibility even earlier in an event, from ignition and evolving fire front through to impact.
ICEYE senior VP for solutions Stephen Lathrope says the partnership can “provide insurers with a much more complete, timely view of an event, delivering greater clarity during fast-moving events and supporting better-informed decisions from early exposure monitoring through to claims triage and adjuster deployment”.
OroraTech chief technology and product officer Ignacio Zuleta said: “The earlier organisations can detect and understand a wildfire, the more time they have to make informed decisions as conditions evolve.
“Our thermal satellite intelligence provides that critical visibility from the earliest stages of an event, detecting hotspots and tracking fire activity as it develops.
“By bringing that intelligence together with ICEYE’s SAR capabilities, we can help decisionmakers maintain a more continuous understanding of a wildfire, from first detection through its impact on communities, infrastructure and the surrounding environment.”
