Suncorp offers access to address-level peril risks
Australians can now access tailored resilience reports and videos detailing their properties’ individual weather risks.
Suncorp has teamed up with property and natural peril risk data provider Haven to launch the digital tool.
“Recent weather events such as Ex-Tropical Cyclone Alfred are a stark reminder of our vulnerability,” Suncorp consumer insurance CEO Lisa Harrison said.
“This is about improving household resilience and looking to reduce property damage.
“Haven enables all homeowners to understand their risk and the proactive steps they can take to safeguard their homes from future danger.”
The reports give an estimated risk of storm, cyclone, flood and bushfire for each property, and tailored recommendations on how to strengthen homes.
More than 2.7 million addresses are at high risk of at least one extreme weather peril, Suncorp says.
About 1.3 million face high risk of bushfire. The figure is almost 40,000 for flood, more than 1.5 million for storm damage and nearly 38,000 for cyclone.
Resilience measures might include elevating power outlets and air-conditioning units, or swapping absorbent floorboards for waterproof options.
A Suncorp spokesperson says Haven will not influence premiums and is “purely a resilience tool” to educate people.
“It’s not designed to have price implications or to be reflective of that,” she said.
Home policyholders with Suncorp and NRMA Insurance have previously been offered premium discounts if they use a federally funded bushfire resilience app to reduce risk.
Suncorp Haven uses Google, CoreLogic and WillyWeather data to compile reports, which are available here.
