Markel appoints national distribution head

US-based specialty insurer Markel has hired Scott Luxford to take the new role of Australian head of distribution and managing general agent strategy.

Mr Luxford was mostly recently distribution head with underwriting agency and Lloyd’s coverholder Harland Green. Before that, he was executive director at 360 Professional and Financial Risks.

Markel says Mr Luxford will work with Australian brokers, agencies and other distribution partners.

“His appointment continues Markel’s approach to having a strong local presence in Australia, with on-the-ground capabilities to support new and existing Australian brokers and customers.”

Mr Luxford is based in Sydney and starts the job today, reporting to Australia MD Rory Morison.

“Australia has a vibrant MGA marketplace that plays a significant role in the local insurance landscape … [Scott’s] expertise will be central to strengthening Markel’s long-term partnerships with both brokers and MGAs,” Mr Morison said.

Mr Luxford will be part of Markel’s global wholesale distribution strategy and broker development team, led by London-based distribution strategies and business development MD Dan Martin.

Mr Martin says Mr Luxford “will play a central role in our commitment to making it easier for brokers and MGAs to do business with us”.
