Johns Lyng cops fine over building inspection breaches

Building services provider Johns Lyng Group has been fined $49,500 for breaching Victoria’s construction notification rules.

A spokesperson for the listed group told insuranceNEWS.com.au the infringement is not related to its insurance building operations.

The Victorian Building Authority announced yesterday that two companies in the group – Johns Lyng Commercial Builders and Johns Lyng Makesafe Emergency Builders – were fined $37,500 and $12,000 respectively.

“Both companies failed to perform work in a competent manner and to a professional standard by failing to notify the relevant building surveyor of a mandatory inspection stage,” the VBA said. “They then continued construction work beyond the mandatory inspection stage without approval.”

The authority says notifications and inspections are required under the Building Act to ensure work is signed off as safe and compliant at specific stages of construction.

The Johns Lyng spokesperson told insuranceNEWS.com.au: “We acknowledge the VBA’s findings regarding two administrative oversights that occurred in late 2022. These were isolated incidents unrelated to our insurance building operations in Victoria.

“Importantly, both matters were rectified promptly with retrospective inspections approved by the relevant building surveyor.”
