ICA widens Queensland storm declaration as claims top 25,000

The Insurance Council of Australia has expanded its significant event declaration for the recent Brisbane hailstorm to include more hail and strong wind that hit southeast Queensland between October 31 and November 2.

The council’s claims tally has climbed to at least 25,980 following the October 26 Brisbane hail event, which was declared significant two days later.

“While the storms of the past two weeks have been geographically widespread, insurers acknowledge some small communities – such as Clifton, Pratten and Esk – have been particularly impacted,” the council said.

It says claims are “varying in severity, from hail-damaged motor vehicles, smashed windows, shattered solar panels and roof damage.

“Insurers are closely monitoring claims from these regions, with some having already activated a local presence ... to support impacted policyholders through the claims process.”

Council CEO Andrew Hall says the wild weather is a “reminder that storm season is well and truly here. Insurers are prioritising claims from these hailstorms and ICA will continue monitoring claims counts and impacts over the coming months.”

The council says the combined event will be known as the Severe Spring Storms.
