Court ‘sends message’ with CTP scam penalty

A fraudster who worked as a security guard while claiming compulsory third party payments from QBE has been found guilty of providing false statements.

A local court in NSW sentenced Moeed Ghauree to a 12-month community correction order after the State Insurance Regulatory Authority uncovered the scam.

Ghauree filed three certificates of fitness to QBE between November 2023 and January 2024 falsely stating he had not been working.

In addition to the correction order, he must pay SIRA $5000 for professional costs.

The regulator says the sentence, delivered last month, reflects how seriously the courts treat offences against the CTP scheme.

“In sentencing, her honour recognised that while this was not a matter in which she would impose a jail sentence, the sentence had to send a message to other people in the community,” SIRA said.

“This outcome forms part of SIRA’s broader regulatory strategy and an ongoing commitment to protecting the integrity of the NSW insurance schemes in its oversight.”
