Brisbane storm claim tally tops 16,000
Suncorp has received 5500 claims so far after storms hit Queensland and Victoria at the weekend, and IAG has reported more than 3900 claims from the southeast Queensland event.
The Insurance Council of Australia has declared the hailstorm that hit the Brisbane area on October 26 a significant event.
Some 16,000 claims have been lodged, an ICA spokeswoman told insuranceNEWS.com.au today.
Suncorp CEO Steve Johnston says destructive wind and hail prompted 5000 claims in southeast Queensland and 500 in Victoria. The insurer estimates the net cost of the events to be $220-$260 million.
Mr Johnston says Suncorp’s Disaster Management Centre “is in full swing” and it has deployed mobile hubs to the hardest-hit areas.
IAG says with more extreme weather forecast for coming days, it is using a new artificial intelligence model to identify homes that require urgent repairs.
Its situation awareness map combines customer data with real-time hazard intelligence, including hail impact boundaries and severity information, to prioritise emergency repairs and contact customers who may not have lodged claims.
IAG’s 3900 claims figure includes brands including NRMA Insurance and RACQ Insurance.
