Insurer’s NZ chair to step down

Suncorp New Zealand says David Flacks will retire as chair after more than six years in the position.

He joined the boards of Suncorp-owned Vero NZ and Vero Liability in 2013 before taking the top job in 2019.

NZ CEO Jimmy Higgins hailed Mr Flacks’ insight and strategic thinking, which have “helped shape our business into the strong and future-focused organisation it is today. He has been instrumental in guiding our strategy and ensuring we are positioned to meet the challenges of a changing environment.

“David departs with the respect and gratitude of the entire Suncorp team.”

Director Rob McDonald will become chair from next month. He joined the board earlier this year and previously served as CFO at Air New Zealand.

He says he looks forward to building on the “momentum” Mr Flacks helped create.

“He has steered the organisation through a period of change and growth, always with a clear focus on doing the right thing for our customers and our people,” Mr McDonald said. “David’s deep governance experience has been invaluable, and he leaves us in a strong position.”

The change comes after Suncorp chair Christine McLoughlin announced her retirement, effective after next month’s annual general meeting.
