Eye in the sky gives ‘rolling snapshot’ of floods
Satellite imagery group ICEYE has launched a flood response tool that gives insurers near-real-time data to support customer recovery operations.
Flood Rapid Impact is designed to deliver detailed floodwater extent reports within six to 12 hours of the first signs of an event.
It draws on data from the Finnish company’s synthetic aperture radar constellation, which enables flood monitoring day or night and through clouds.
VP insurance solutions Rupert Bidwell told insuranceNEWS.com.au it has been “another active flood year in Australia. To date, ICEYE has provided detailed analysis on eight flood events, capturing satellite imagery across a total area of 233,335 square km, including large-scale floods in NSW and Queensland.
“These types of events are well-suited to the FRI methodology, which is designed primarily for floods lasting over 24 hours and spanning large areas, from multiple regions or towns to entire states.”
Mr Bidwell says ICEYE’s automated system “provides insurers with rolling flood extent snapshots and observation coverage based on satellite imagery, monitoring flood progression including water arrival, peaks, recession and downstream surges.
“Such rapid situational awareness enables teams to assess the flood’s full scope quickly. Insurers can identify where floodwaters are, determine which policyholders are most impacted, and co-ordinate response efforts.
“They can deploy claims teams and adjusters more efficiently to the hardest-hit areas, speeding up recovery and support for affected communities.”
