icare probes possible workers’ comp underpayments
NSW state insurer icare has identified about 9400 workers’ compensation claims that may have been underpaid because inflation adjustments were not included.
It is investigating the claims to see if changes are needed as part of an industry-wide review ordered by the State Insurance Regulatory Authority.
The review focuses on claims from October 2012, when decisions on worker weekly payments were made by the Workers Compensation Commission or the Personal Injury Commission.
The Personal Injury Commission took over from the Workers Compensation Commission as the dispute resolution tribunal on March 1 2021.
“Teams from icare and our claims service providers are working proactively to identify eligible claims and contact impacted workers,” the insurer says on its website.
icare and claims service providers are improving processes to ensure injured workers receive fair and accurate payments, and the insurer says it is introducing regular checks to help improve accuracy and transparency.
SIRA says it issued a directive to icare on August 12 calling for a review of workers’ compensation claims that may require adjustment for inflation.
“The process is currently ongoing,” a spokesperson said.
