AILA set for leadership change after convention

Australian Insurance Law Association (AILA) President David Lee will step down at the group’s AGM next month.

Mr Lee, a partner at national law firm Lee and Lyons, has held the position for three years and will remain on the association’s board as immediate past president.

He presided over his last national conference from September 17-19 at Hamilton Island.

Some 240 delegates heard from speakers such as former High Court justice Michael Kirby, HIH liquidator and McGrathNicol Chairman Tony McGrath and former Queensland Supreme Court justice Des Derrington.

Mr Kirby’s address marked the 30th anniversary of the Insurance Contracts Act 1984, which he helped develop as inaugural chairman of the Australian Law Reform Commission.

At a gala dinner Brisbane barrister Richard Douglas was awarded the insurance law prize for his contribution to education and Dr Derrington was granted AILA life membership.
