Actuaries launch fresh ad campaign

The Actuaries Institute is planning a new advertising campaign promoting the profession to young people.

The print and digital drive, which will be launched next month and run for six weeks, builds on a campaign in April that showed how actuaries use their skills across all business sectors, not just insurance and finance.

“We want to encourage high school students, to make sure we’re actually seen as attractive to a broader range of people,” President Daniel Smith told insuranceNEWS.com.au.

“Being a good actuary is more than just being good at maths. At the moment there’s a bit of a stereotype. But we also want people who are good in a broad range of areas, such as communication.”

The institute says the campaign will reinforce the message about actuaries’ value to business, government and the community, and will showcase their unique skills and expertise.

A spokesman says the earlier campaign was “positive overall in increasing awareness of the profession”. Feedback was positive and digital analytics showed a better than average success with target audiences.

Mr Smith says the new campaign will also target human resources managers.

“So rather than thinking of an actuary as an insurance person, [they] can think of an actuary as being a problem-solver. Therefore, when they are recruiting, they may cast their net a little wider.”
