WA notes rise in ‘claims harvesting’

The number of WA motor accident victims being encouraged to lodge an exaggerated or false motor injury insurance claim has risen “dramatically” to 322 in the past two years, according to the WA Insurance Commission.

Claims harvesting involves people purporting to be crash investigators or insurance commission employees cold-calling injured people and promising money if they lodge a claim through a specific legal firm.

A number of legal firms are suspected to have taken part in the scam.

The Insurance Commission says it is working with other government entities to investigate and manage “harvested” claims.
