Suncorp welcomes farm accident ruling

Suncorp has welcomed the Tasmanian Supreme Court’s decision to award almost $12 million compensation to a British backpacker who was left a quadriplegic after a farm accident.

Holly Raper was working on a King Island dairy farm in 2011 when the quad bike she was riding rolled. She also suffered brain injuries and requires 24-hour care.

The 27-year-old’s family sought $40 million from farm owners David and Jocelyn Bowden, to help pay for care.

Damages will be covered by Suncorp subsidiary GIO.

“Suncorp is pleased the Tasmanian Supreme Court has reached a decision so Holly Raper’s family can now focus on the care of their daughter,” the company says.

“Workers’ compensation cases like this are complex and require experts to advise the court on decisions that are fair to the injured person.

“In this case, evidence was also needed to be gathered in England.”

Suncorp says it has supported Ms Raper’s treatment during the claims and legal processes, including assisting in her repatriation.
