NTI spreads word on preventable truck fires

National Transport Insurance (NTI) has started an awareness campaign following a growing number of truck fire claims.

The specialist truck insurer says a spike in claims for engine, tyre and brake, and electrical fires has prompted its call for strict maintenance schedules and planning in the lead-up to summer.

CEO Tony Clark says many incidents could have been prevented.

“When combined with high temperatures and hot surfaces, deteriorated brakes and bearings, loose wiring and oil leaks can all increase the risk of fire,” he said.

“Fires often result in a total loss of the vehicle, which can, in turn, increase claims costs and even premiums for policyholders.”

He says operators also struggle managing freight with reduced fleets.

“NTI encourages all truck owners and operators to spread the word on truck fire risks with their peers, and to make safety the No.1 priority for themselves and their businesses,” he said.

Ensuring maintenance schedules are up to date, maintaining a focus on fire prevention equipment and training, and care when refuelling will all help minimise risks.
