April storms add to NZ weather losses

New Zealand’s insurance losses have climbed to $NZ203.9 million ($189.2 million) this year following the addition of preliminary estimates for April storms and final figures for cyclones that lashed the country in February.

Storms that hit nationwide from April 27-29, including Rotorua flooding, caused losses of $NZ16.1 million ($14.9 million) from 1475 claims lodged so far, according to Insurance Council of New Zealand provisional data.

The figures include 1128 house and contents claims for $NZ11.4 million ($10.6 million) and 209 commercial claims costing $NZ3.7 million ($3.4 million).

Cyclone Fehi losses totalled $NZ45.9 million ($42.6 million) from 3750 claims. Cyclone Gita, which hit a few weeks later, cost $NZ35.6 million ($33 million) across 4694 claims.

The year-to-date total does not include figures for severe weather last month and this month, including flooding in Gisborne.
