Insurers await answers on flight MH370

As more nations join the search for the missing Malaysia Airlines flight MH370, the number of insurers involved is also growing.

The Boeing 777-200 was covered by Malaysian insurer Etiqa Insurance and Takaful, according to reports from Kuala Lumpur.

The Malaysia Airlines fleet is covered by a pool of local and international insurers and reinsurers. Allianz Malaysia has confirmed it is in the pool as a reinsurer, while others include Hannover Re, GIC Re and Eurasia – part of Kazakh Insurance Company.

If the flight is found to have been subject to terrorism, Lloyd’s syndicate Atrium is reported to be the lead insurer.

Most of the plane’s 239 passengers and crew were Chinese. Ping An Insurance says it had 38 clients on board, while China Life had 30. Allianz is reported to have 10 clients on the flight.

Claims forecasts have varied from $US200 million ($219.98 million) to $US500 million ($549.95 million). The flight disappeared on March 8 while on a scheduled service from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing.
