Catlin founder nominated for hall of fame

Catlin Group founder and CEO Stephen Catlin has been nominated for induction to the Insurance Hall of Fame next year.

The scheme’s administrator, the US-based International Insurance Society, says Mr Catlin is a recognised leader in the global property and casualty industry and is well known for his commitment to communities and environmental research.

It says his career is a “case study in leadership and entrepreneurial spirit within the insurance industry”.

Mr Catlin started Catlin Group – a Bermuda-based insurer and reinsurer that operates in 25 countries – in 1984.

It has grown from a small managing agency at Lloyd’s of London with two employees to a multinational insurance holding company with 2500 staff and gross written premium of more than $US5.3 billion ($6.16 billion) in 2013.

Mr Catlin has also been elected Chairman of the Association of Bermuda Insurers and Reinsurers for a two-year term beginning on January 1. He succeeds XL Group CEO Mike McGavick.

Catlin opened its first Australian office in Sydney in 2004, followed by a Melbourne office in 2010.

Other nominees for the Insurance Hall of Fame are Ageas Chairman Jozef De Mey, ILS Capital Management Chairman Donald Kramer and former PartnerRe CEO Patrick Thiele.

One inductee, voted for by society members, will be announced next month. The induction award will be presented at a gala dinner in New York next June 15.
