Allianz lead insurer for ill-fated flight

Allianz is the lead insurer for the Malaysia Airlines jet shot down last week over eastern Ukraine, killing all 298 people on board.

The Boeing 777 was flying to Kuala Lumpur from Amsterdam when it was hit by a Russian-made surface-to-air missile.

An Allianz spokesman says it is too early to comment on the circumstances.

The Ukrainian Government has blamed the attack on pro-Russian rebels.

Lloyd’s specialty insurer Atrium Underwriting Group was the leader for war coverage, and could pay claims if the damage is tied to terrorism.

The aircraft was valued at $US97.3 million ($103.56 million).
