Allianz is lead insurer of Germanwings plane

Allianz Global Corporate & Specialty is lead insurer for the German budget airline whose plane crashed in the French Alps last week.

The Germanwings Airbus A320 was flying from Barcelona to Dusseldorf when it crashed, killing all 150 people on board.

“We can confirm that Allianz Global Corporate & Specialty is the lead insurer of the Germanwings aviation hull and liability policy that covers this flight 4U 9525,” the insurer said in a statement. “In the case of a claim arising from malicious or hostile acts, the hull element of the claim would be transferred to the ‘hull war’ insurers of Germanwings.

“The liability element of the policy would be unaffected and will continue to be covered by Allianz Global Corporate & Specialty and its co-insurers.”

French investigations suggest co-pilot Andreas Lubitz deliberately crashed the plane after the captain left the cockpit for a bathroom break.

Germanwings is the budget offshoot of Lufthansa.
